Why Proper Sleep and Light Cycles Are Critical for Bird Health

Sleep: Sleep is perhaps the most underrated when it comes to bird care. Birds have a light sensitivity unlike human beings. In their natural habitat, birds live by the rhythm of the sun. Disruption of this cycle leads to stress and health disorders quickly enough.

The amount of solitary sleeping time pet birds require daily is between 10 and 12 hours. Light exposure, televisions, and other noise within the home can interrupt sleeping cycles. When these pets do not get enough rest, it causes irritability, screaming, immune problems, and feather issues.

Adequate light exposure during the day is also essential. While natural light exposure is important for regulating your bird’s hormonal balances, activity level, and moods, too little light exposure can cause your birds to be lethargic or depressed, or too much light can stimulate them.

Keeping the cage covered at night, observing a regular bedtime regimen, and allowing sunlight exposure during the day is helpful for a regular sleeping cycle. Sleeping properly enhances behavioral patterns, boosts the immune systems of parrots, and keeps them emotionally stable. Sleeping properly is not optional; it is a must.
